The world was stunned after the news broke that a captive gorilla had been shot after a four-year-old boy fell into his enclosure at Cincinnati zoo on Saturday. Harambe, a 17-year-old silverback gorilla, was shot dead by zookeepers who understandably feared for the child’s life.

Shocking footage of the incident has since gone viral, causing many to speak out against the decision to shoot the animal. Many viewers of the footage have interpreted the gorilla’s actions as protecting the child rather than intending to harm him. Others have called for the child’s parents to be prosecuted for negligence after they failed to stop the boy falling into the enclosure in the first place.

Zoo director Thane Maynard commented: “[The officials] made a tough choice and they made the right choice because they saved that little boy’s life. It could have been very bad.”

A zookeeper who has been working with gorillas since her twenties has also weighed in on the debate, sharing her own personal interpretation of the incident over on Facebook. You can check out her post in full over on the next page.
